RECOFTC
RECOFTC is derived from an abbreviated form of the organization's legal name, Regional Community Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific. Formerly the organization was known as RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests.
RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests is an international not-for-profit organization that focuses on capacity building for community forestry in the Asia Pacific region. It advocates for the increased involvement of local communities living in and around forests - some 450 million people in Asia-Pacific - in the equitable and ecologically sustainable management of forest landscapes.
The Regional Community Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific (RECOFTC) opened in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 1987 with support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the Government of Switzerland (through the Asian Development Bank), and Thailand's Kasetsart University.
Community forestry is widely acknowledged as a powerful solution for many of the challenges facing local people and the wider society, especially in improving rural livelihoods, enhancing community governance and empowerment, transforming forest-related conflict, protecting and enhancing the environment, and helping to fight climate change. As a capacity-building organisation, RECOFTC improves the ability of people and organisations to conduct community forestry effectively and sustainably.
RECOFTC works toward its mission through four thematic areas:
- expanding community forestry
- people, forests and climate change
- transforming forest conflict
- securing local livelihoods.

Third Regional Forum for People and Forests: Strengthening Commitment to Community Forestry Action Plans in Asia
The Third Regional Forum for People and Forests was organized by RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests in collaboration with the Royal Forest Department, the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet), the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), along with support from Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
This is the summary report of the forum.
Prioritising support for locally controlled forest enterprises
This book comprises detailed assessments of the likely impacts of small-enterprise support across different forest subsectors in eight countries. The work advances recommendations that are sometimes generic and sometimes linked to support for particular subsectors of locally controlled forest enterprises, including improving natural resource governance and tenure, as well as supporting investment in organization-building for forest and farm producer organisations.
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent in REDD+: Q&A handbook
This publication has been developed to provide support to local trainers and facilitators who are engaged in delivering REDD+, climate change related training, and who already have a basic understanding of these subjects.
ForInfo Factsheet: Forest Certification for Ecosystem Services
The project covers two pilot sites encompassing 41,000 ha of forest land: Vinh Tu Commune in Quang Tri Province and Huong Son District in Ha Tinh Province. Both sites are commercially used forest and have potential for a certification mechanism. The certification project presumes that ecosystem services can be provided alongside sustainable forest management. Innovatively, the pilot test will help develop national standards and indicators for ecosystem certification.
