International soft-law instruments developed over the past ten years provide guidance on how to secure land rights and improve land governance, including in the context of private investment. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) are a prominent example. Other guidelines, used by businesses, include the International Finance Corporation’s Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability (IFC-PS).
LEGEND outputs take stock of progress in implementing the VGGT, and compare the VGGT with the IFC-PS, identifying differences where applying the IFC-PS may fail to address land rights issues covered in the VGGT.
