The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.


The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

Part I of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 makes provision for access to the countryside. Section 35 of the Act relates to agreements between access authorities and owners and occupiers of land with respect to the means of access to land over which there is a public right of access under section 2 of the Act ("access land").

Demoted Tenancies (Review of Decisions)(Wales) Regulations 2005 (S.I. No. 1679 of 2004).

A landlord wishing to end a demoted tenancy must serve the tenant with a notice stating that he or she has decided to apply to the court for an order for possession, setting out the reasons for that decision and informing the tenant of his right to request a review of the decision. These Regulations make provision about the procedure to be followed in such a review. Regulation 2 provides that a review must be undertaken by a person who was not involved in the original decision.

New Forest National Park Authority (Establishment) Order 2005 (S.I. No. 421 of 2005).

This Order establishes the New Forest National Park Authority for the Park designated under Part II of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 It specifies the time when the Authority becomes the local planning authority for the Park. In particular, this Order makes provision for the membership of the Authority, meetings and proceedings of the Authority, reports, returns and accounts, staff, etc. The Authority becomes, for most purposes, the sole local planning authority for the Park.

Town and Country Planning (Blight Provisions) (Wales) Order 2005 (S.I. No. No. 367 (W.33) of 2005).

The blight notice provisions in sections 149 to 171 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 enable persons holding certain interests in categories of land, specified in Schedule 13 to the Act (including land affected by certain planning and highway proposals), to require the appropriate authority to acquire their interest in the land.

This Order amends the "1995 Order", mainly in relation to permitted development rights. This Order amends the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995. Part 3 of Schedule 2 to that Order grants planning permission for certain changes of use by reference to classes of use specified in the Town and Country Planning (Use Classes) Order 1987.
