The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the ordinary sense but a unique partnership to reduce poverty and support development. The World Bank Group has two ambitious goals: End extreme poverty within a generation and boost shared prosperity.

  • To end extreme poverty, the Bank's goal is to decrease the percentage of people living on less than $1.25 a day to no more than 3% by 2030.
  • To promote shared prosperity, the goal is to promote income growth of the bottom 40% of the population in each country.

The World Bank Group comprises five institutions managed by their member countries.

The World Bank Group and Land: Working to protect the rights of existing land users and to help secure benefits for smallholder farmers

The World Bank (IBRD and IDA) interacts primarily with governments to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen land tenure policies and improve land governance. More than 90% of the World Bank’s agriculture portfolio focuses on the productivity and access to markets by small holder farmers. Ten percent of our projects focus on the governance of land tenure.

Similarly, investments by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private sector arm, including those in larger scale enterprises, overwhelmingly support smallholder farmers through improved access to finance, inputs and markets, and as direct suppliers. IFC invests in environmentally and socially sustainable private enterprises in all parts of the value chain (inputs such as irrigation and fertilizers, primary production, processing, transport and storage, traders, and risk management facilities including weather/crop insurance, warehouse financing, etc

Economic Analysis of Tobacco and Options for Tobacco Control : China Case Study

Maio, 2013
China

China has a very high prevalence rate of
cigarette smoking. According to a 1996 Chinese national
survey, 63% of adult males (age 15 and over) and 3.8% of
adult females were current smokers (Chinese Academy of
Preventive Medicine, 1997). These prevalence rates indicate
that there are over 320 million cigarette smokers in China,
which accounts for nearly one-third of the smokers in the
world (Collishaw, 1998). Moreover, it has been estimated

State and Trends of the Carbon Market 2003

Maio, 2013

The emerging carbon market encompasses both project-based emission reduction transactions, whereby a buyer participates in the financing of a project which reduces greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, compared with what would have happened otherwise, and gets some of the emission reductions (ERs) thus generated in return; and, trades of GHG emission allowances allocated under existing, or incoming, cap-and-trade GHG emissions control regimes.

The Costs and Profitability of Tobacco Compared to Other Crops in Zimbabwe

Maio, 2013
Zimbabwe

This study compares the financial costs
and returns to tobacco growing with twelve (traditional and
non-traditional) alternative crops, looking at
profitability, costs, labor intensity, financial support,
technical infrastructure, land-suitability, marketing
difficulties, world demand, and production risks. It aims to
provide an improved understanding of the trade-offs farmers
face in deciding what crops to grow. The analysis is based

Poverty Reduction : Does Reproductive Health Matter?

Maio, 2013

Funding for the reproductive health
agenda agreed at the 1994 International Conference on
Population and Development has fallen short of estimated
requirements. In the changed funding environment, stronger
evidence on the links between reproductive health and
poverty reduction is needed. This paper reviews the evidence
base on three reproductive health outcomes: early
childbearing, maternal survival, and unintended pregnancy.

Angola Nutrition Gap Analysis

Maio, 2013

Despite remarkable economic growth in
the past decade, undernutrition remains a serious public
health problem in Angola. High rates of child stunting and
micronutrient deficiencies are contributing to an under-five
mortality rate of 161 deaths per 1,000 live births, limiting
the growth and development of children, hindering
productivity, and preventing the country from reaching
millennium development goals one and four. In response to
