Re-evaluation of the role of the grey partridge Perdix perdix as a disperser of arable weed seeds

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
Polônia

The endozoochorous dispersal of weed seeds, mediated by birds and without any adaptation to frugivory, has been studied very rarely. We studied the endozoochorous dispersal of viable seeds by the grey partridge Perdix perdix in agricultural landscape. We assessed the content of intact seeds in 609 grey partridge droppings coming from 21 sampling sites in Poland that included three land-cover types (winter cereals, winter oil-seed rape and stubble fields). We found 159 intact seeds of 13 plant species. Most of them are classified as plants without any evolved adaptations to dispersal.

Physico-chemical analysis of surface and groundwater around Singrauli Coal Field, District Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, India

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
Índia

The present study was carried out in Singrauli area of the north India to know the water quality at selected sites. Physico-chemical parameters like pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), bicarbonate, hardness, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, sulfate, copper, iron, cobalt, manganese, zinc, and chromium were analyzed in 27 water samples. Locations selected for sampling were based on the preliminary field survey carried out to understand the overall impact of mining and industrialization on the surface and groundwater resources of Singrauli.

Rangeland governance in an open system: Protecting transhumance corridors in the Far North Province of Cameroon

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
Camarões

The mobile pastoral system in the far north region of Cameroon is an excellent example of the paradox of pastoral land tenure, in that pastoralists need secure access to pasture and water, but also flexibility in resource use, i.e. the ability to move elsewhere because of spatio-temporal variation in resource availability.

Local-level determinants of wildcat occupancy in Northeast Scotland

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013

We studied the influence of food abundance, land cover and disturbance on European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris Schreber, 1777) presence in Scotland. Wildcat records were collected using camera trapping, and prey data were assessed through linear transects and small mammal trapping. Surveys were carried out in three study areas in northeast Scotland. Wildcat occupancy was best predicted by a combination of food and land cover variables.

Landslide susceptibility mapping using rough sets and back-propagation neural networks in the Three Gorges, China

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
China

In the Three Gorges of China, there are frequent landslides, and the potential risk of landslides is tremendous. An efficient and accurate method of generating landslide susceptibility maps is very important to mitigate the loss of lives and properties caused by these landslides. This paper presents landslide susceptibility mapping on the Zigui-Badong of the Three Gorges, using rough sets and back-propagation neural networks (BPNNs). Landslide locations were obtained from a landslide inventory map, supported by field surveys.
