compositional and configurational heterogeneity of matrix habitats shape woodland carabid communities in wooded-agricultural landscapes

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2016

CONTEXT: Landscape heterogeneity (the composition and configuration of matrix habitats) plays a major role in shaping species communities in wooded-agricultural landscapes. However, few studies consider the influence of different types of semi-natural and linear habitats in the matrix, despite their known ecological value for biodiversity.

Towards an energy–landscape integrated analysis? Exploring the links between socio-metabolic disturbance and landscape ecology performance (Mallorca, Spain, 1956–2011)

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2016
Espanha

CONTEXT: The role of agricultural landscapes in biodiversity conservation is an emerging topic in a world experiencing a worrying decrease of species richness. Farm systems may either decrease or increase biological diversity, depending on land-use intensities and management. OBJECTIVES: We present an intermediate disturbance-complexity model (IDC) of cultural landscapes aimed at assessing how different levels of anthropogenic disturbance on ecosystems affect the capacity to host biodiversity depending on the land matrix heterogeneity.

Policy impacts on regulating ecosystem services: looking at the implications of 60 years of landscape change on soil erosion prevention in a Mediterranean silvo-pastoral system

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2016
Portugal

CONTEXT: Policy decisions form a major driver of land use change, with important implications for socially and environmentally susceptible regions. It is well known that there can be major unintended consequences, especially where policies are not tailored to regionally specific contexts. OBJECTIVES: In this paper we assess the implications of 60 years of agricultural policies on soil erosion prevention (SEP) by vegetation, an essential regulating ecosystem service in Mediterranean Europe.

Relationship Between Shoreline Armoring and Adjacent Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in Chesapeake Bay and Nearby Atlantic Coastal Bays

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2016

Shoreline armoring is an ancient and globally used engineering strategy to prevent shoreline erosion along marine, estuarine, and freshwater coastlines. Armoring alters the land water interface and has the potential to affect nearshore submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) by changing nearshore hydrology, morphology, water clarity, and sediment composition.

Application of a Water Rights Trading Model Based on two-Stage Interval-Parameter Stochastic Programming

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2016

In recent decades, increasing conflicts have occurred between different water users because of issues related to water resource allocation. To better allocate water resources, this study adopts the latest water rights trading model instead of the traditional water resources allocation model and combines it with a two-stage interval-parameter stochastic programming model (TISP). The combined model was applied to the Sanjiang Plain with multi-area, multi-source, and multi-water users, and the optimized promised water availability for every user in the area was obtained.
