Understanding transportation-caused rangeland damage in Mongolia

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
Mongólia

Mongolia, a vast and sparsely populated semi-arid country, has very little formal road infrastructure. Since the 1990s, private ownership and usage of vehicles has been increasing, which has created a web of dirt track corridors due to the communal land tenure and unobstructed terrain, with some of these corridors reaching over 4 km in width. This practice aids wind- and water-aided erosion and desertification, causing enormous negative environmental effects.

Changes in land use, land tenure, and landscape fragmentation in the Tijuana River Watershed following reform of the ejido sector

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2012

Changes in land use and land tenure can influence both physical fragmentation and ownership fragmentation of landscapes, with implications for biodiversity. In this study, we evaluated changes in land use and land tenure in the Tijuana River Watershed, a region of high biodiversity and endemism, following the implementation of a new Agrarian Law which allowed for privatization and sales of communal land (ejidos) beginning in 1992. In order to understand changes in land use and cover, we constructed maps from aerial photographs and Aster images and measured changes between 1994 and 2005.

Land tenure, land markets, and institutional transformation in Zambia

Journal Articles & Books
Novembro, 1995
Zâmbia

The Government of Zambia is embarking on an ambitious program of legal and administrative reforms in land policy. Although the need to liberalize the land market is universally shared, the ideas on how to accomplish this transformation are not. Two decades of underinvestment in field research have resulted in the present situation of micro-level data on land tenure and farm-level production, consumption, and resource management inadequate to guide policy decisions.

Leases, concessions, and authorizations. Searching for an alternative to the privatization of federal domain in Brazil

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
Brasil

It has been nearly 10 years since the federal government of Brazil decided to make land tenure regularization a true priority. In theory, millions of families who informally occupy the federal domain should receive freeholds, emphyteutic leases, concessions of real or special rights, or occupancy authorizations. However, this paper questions the capacity of the Federal Land Agency to issue and manage these leases, concessions, and authorizations.

Is Proactive Adaptation to Climate Change Necessary in Grazed Rangelands?

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2012

In this article we test the notion that adaptation to climate change in grazed rangelands requires little more effort than current approaches to risk management because the inherent climate variability that characterizes rangelands provides a management environment that is preadapted to climate change. We also examine the alternative hypothesis that rangeland ecosystems and the people they support are highly vulnerable to climate change.

effects of land tenure and land use on the urban forest structure and composition of Melbourne

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2013
Austrália

The urban forest provides valuable ecosystem services for enhancing human well-being. Its structure and composition determine the quantity and quality of these services. There has been little research on the heterogeneity in structure and composition of urban forests in the Australasian region, especially in the centre of a highly dynamic and rapidly urbanizing city. This paper quantifies the structure and the composition of the urban forest of Melbourne, Australia's city centre.

Characterization of enclosure management regimes and factors influencing their choice among agropastoralists in North-Western Kenya

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2015
África

The enclosure system is an increasingly popular approach for land rehabilitation among communities inhabiting the arid and semi-arid lands in Africa. However, the mixed results associated with its adoption by households call for an in-depth understanding of the management regimes.
