Uganda
The persistence of land and tenure related conflicts in Uganda reflects colonial social policies which promoted division and cemented inequality. Uganda is at the heart of the conflicted Great Lakes region and for some years the country has hosted the largest refugee population in Africa. The ruling National Resistance Movement led by President Yoweri Museveni has been in power for 36 years. Uganda’s agricultural modernisation, conservation and tourism promotion agendas have impacted on land rights. Unresolved land issues remain at the heart of national politics.
