Integrated Agro-ecosystem Approach for enhancing Livelihoods and Climate Resilience in Tuvalu

To reverse land degradation, enhance local livelihoods and increase climate resilience through integrated agro-ecosystem approach in all the islands of Tuvalu

Target Groups

The project will generate important socio-economic benefits, including benefits for COVID-19 recovery and climate resilience at the local level in Tuvalu. In particular, it will generate benefits to a total of 2,750direct beneficiaries, of which 1,100 women and 1,650 men.The SLM practices using IAE approach to be promoted will include improved management of pigs by promoting DLT and biodigesters for managing waste that will generate significant socioeconomic benefits, including: reduction in foul odour from current production systems; availability of biogas for cooking, reducing the pressure on the ecosystem for provisions of firewood; organic fertilizer for home gardens and growing crops; and availability of pigs to meet community and cultural obligations.In addition, the expected improvements in local food production will provide socioeconomic benefits, including: availability of more nutritious local food, which improves health; reduce household expenditures on low nutritious imported foods; support domestic trading to provide income, especially for rural communities in outer island who supply most of the local foods to Funafuti. The project will also support opportunities for economic empowerment of women by supporting food processing methods and through provisional ecosystem services in fibre for handicrafts and plants with high medicinal value.Furthermore, the project will revive traditional farming skills based on traditional ecological knowledge that are cultural heritage to be preserved and have been the foundation of Tuvaluan culture and resilience for many generations.Thereby, the project interventions will also contribute to full and productive employment and decent work in rural areas, aiming at the progressive realization of local peoples’ right to Decent Rural Employment.[1][1] For more information on FAO’s work on decent rural employment and related guidance materials please consult the FAO thematic website at: http://www.fao.org/rural-employment/en/.

Supporting Community Policing and Stabilisation in Iraq

General

This project contributes to enhancing peace, security and stability through rebuilding trust between law enforcement officials and communities; and a conducive environment for returns through strengthened social cohesion and increasing access to rights and political representation. To address these objectives, IOM will increase the capacity of law enforcement officials and the ability of the community to engage with one another to identify and resolve security issues through the Community Policing approach, as well as increase interagency coordination on border security issues. This project will also strengthen the participation of the Yazidi community in transitional justice mechanisms development, and increase inter community cohesion and political representation of Yazidis. IOM will support Yazidis and other vulnerable families to access housing, land and property rights as well as enhanced tenure security and rights.

Strengthening Urban Resilience for Growth with Equity (SURGE)

General

(Philippines): The SURGE activity is a crucial component of USAID/Philippines' Cities Development Initiative, which promotes more balanced and resilient urban growth, reduced economic disparities, and improved socio-economic conditions for secondary cities and surrounding rural areas, helping develop economic growth hubs outside of Metro Manila and Cebu. SURGE will continue to promote local economic development and expand urban-rural connectivity and access. The activity reinforces USAID goals and policies by helping local governments advance on their paths to self-reliance.To boost partner cities' ability to generate their own resources, SURGE will improve asset and public financial management. It will promote greater transparency, accountability, and effectiveness in local financial planning, revenue generation, and budgeting. The activity will help streamline and automate business permitting processes to reduce red tape and costs to local enterprises, and strengthen the capacity of local economic and investment promotion offices. The activity will bolster land tenure security by improving land information systems and land adjudication processes. It will also improve land use and development planning by integrating vulnerability assessments and disaster preparedness measures. SURGE will support inter-municipal cooperation and metropolitan arrangements that improve coordination between the prime city and adjacent municipalities. It will support public and private participation in regional development planning and improve national-municipal coordination, with particular focus on infrastructure development. The activity will support local government initiatives on economic development and job generation in such sectors as agribusiness and tourism development. This enables partner cities to participate as hubs for greater trade and investment. The activity will also support measures to improve the delivery of public services, such as traffic management.. .. .
