REDD+ and indigenous people

Conflicts between indigenous peoples with territorial rights and other local groups like landless and migrants should be taken into account when planning REDD+ national strategies and action plans.
Acknowledging that indigenous communities are also engaged with markets and external actors, and may prioritize “immediate needs”, is important for the understanding of their livelihoods, decision-making processes and positions regarding REDD+.
Assessments and information about the possible consequences of REDD+ in local areas should be presented in local languages. Participatory budgeting provides interesting experience for fair benefit sharing schemes, which could also be included in REDD+ activities. The participation of women is essential.
Indigenous peoples organizations and local communities in favor of REDD+ see it as a possibility to strengthen territorial control and self-management, and demand respect for their rights, territories and autonomy, with adequate consultation processes.
