The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) was formally established by members of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) during its Council in December 2012. The Council recognized soil as an essential natural resource, which is often overlooked and has not received adequate attention in recent years, despite the fact that production of food, fiber, fodder, and fuel critically depends on healthy soils.

This conmpendium of recent sustainable development initiatives in the field of agriculture and land management has been developed as a supporting document for the Task Manager's Report on the Land and Agriculture Cluster for Chapters 10, 12 and 14 of Agenda 21. The report draws together 75 cases from over 45 countries, illustrating the many features of improved land management and sustainable agriculture and rural development.

The Republic of the Congo and FAO have enjoyed ongoing cooperation since the Representation opened in 1977. In 2013 the first Country Programming Framework was produced, specifying the interventions through which FAO is to contribute to the Congo’s development objectives through to the end of 2016. The CPF is in alignment with the National Development Plan for the same period and it enables the FAO country office to link with the UN Development Assistance Framework for the Congo while supporting the Organization’s Strategic Framework.

Cooperation between Tajikistan and FAO has been ongoing since the country joined the Organization in 1995. FAO assistance was initially provided in the form of short-term emergency interventions to respond to a locust outbreak and also to help the country in its transition to stability after a spell of civil war. More recently, cooperation has shifted to a focus on rehabilitation and development interventions to build a sustainable agriculture sector and food and nutrition security.

The development of the Pillar 1 plan of action was initiated during the “Managing Living Soils” workshop held in Rome, Italy during December 2012. This workshop focused on the regional and national status, as well as challenges and priorities for sustainable soil management. This was followed by a Pillar 1 discussion session during the 2nd Global Soil Week held in Berlin, October 2013. The aim of the discussion was to decide on the structure of the plan of action and its main content.

Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management

The Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (VGSSM) were adopted by the 4th GSP Plenary Assembly (Rome, 23 May 2016), approved by the 25th session of the FAO Committee on Agriculture (Rome, 28 September 2016) and finally endorsed by the 155th session of the FAO Council (Rome, 5 December 2016). These guidelines provide technical and policy recommendations on how sustainable soil management can be achieved. The successful implementation of these guidelines should pave the way to boosting soil health.
