La reglamentación inapropiada en la adquisición de tierras se ha convertido en un problema grave, sobre todo en África subsahariana y Asia sudoriental, donde amenaza la seguridad alimentaria, los medios de vida locales y la gestión sostenible de los recursos naturales y ha provocado conflictos por la tierra y abusos contra los derechos humanos. This special issue of Unasylva has two main objectives. It brings to our readers an edited selection of some of the position papers of the important 4th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry Development in the Tropics and, in doing, this, it emphasizes FAO's principal concern in the field of forestry: how to make the best and wisest use of man's least understood ecological formation, the moist tropical forest.

The Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook provides an up-to-date understanding of gender issues and a rich compilation of compelling evidence of good practices and lessons learned to guide practitioners in integrating gender dimensions into agricultural projects and programs. The Sourcebook is a joint product of the World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and contributions from more than 100 writers and reviewers.

The paper discusses the problems facing countries when managing stocks of fish that move between their EEZs and the EEZs of adjacent countries, or onto the high seas. The action needed depends on the pattern of movement of the stocks. The different patterns of movement are discussed; they vary from small local dispersions in which only a small proportion of the stock cross boundaries between national EEZs to long migrations in which virtually all the stock may move from one EEZ to another.

This paper represents part of an area of work in support of enhancing access to land and forest resources in support of rural livelihoods in Mongolia. It is based on learning emerging from an ongoing FAOsupported project called: Support to the development of participatory forest management (TCP/MON/2903). This project has involved the development (through extensive community-level consultations in forest areas) of a detailed Concept Document for the design and implementation of participatory forestry.

The present paper seeks to cover the key issues, trends, constraints, challenges, knowledge gaps and policy options on a range of dimensions of land access. Land access is broadly defined as the processes by which people individually or collectively gain rights and opportunities to occupy and utilise land (primarily for productive purposes but also other economic and social purposes) on a temporary or permanent basis.
