Aunque está claro que hay profundas vetas de conflicto que conforman la historia de la RDC, se ha argumentado que es engañoso hacer de esto la lente principal a través de la cual ver las disputas por la tierra y los recursos. Más bien hay que entenderlos en relación con los procesos estructurales acelerados de exclusión y desposesión.
