Columbia University Executive Training Program on Sustainable Investments in Agriculture | Land Portal

The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), a joint center of Columbia Law School and the Earth Institute, is excited to announce an interdisciplinary executive-level training course on sustainable investments in agriculture, designed primarily for public sector officials and civil society representatives from developing countries, whose responsibilities relate to investments, agriculture, land or rural development. A select number of representatives from the private sector and development agencies may also be admitted. This program is modeled off of our successful annual trainings on extractive industries and sustainable development.

The course will take place at Columbia University in New York City from March 8-13, 2015. It will provide an overview of pressing issues related to agricultural investments, as well as an introduction to relevant practical skills. Topics will include an introduction to different agricultural investment models; land rights and tenure security; legal and fiscal frameworks, including financial modeling; reading and negotiating investment contracts; long-term planning; managing environmental and water impacts, including addressing climate change concerns; addressing conflicts and overlapping uses of land; and ensuring that investments are gender-sensitive and respect human rights. The goal of the course is to build the knowledge and skills necessary to support responsible agricultural investment, and to facilitate knowledge sharing among the different countries represented at the course. You can find more information in our program brochure.

If you are interested in participating in the training or know of qualified candidates, please visit the training website for the application materials and additional details about the program, or share these details with colleagues. The program fee for the six-day training is USD $2,975; this covers lectures, accommodation, breakfast and lunch, and social events. (For participants who organize their own accommodation, the fee is $2,100). Participants will receive a Statement of Attendance from Columbia University.

The deadline for applying is December 15, 2014; applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. If you have any questions, please contact us at ccsi@law.columbia.edu. We look forward to hearing from you!
