[Agriculture, territory and multifunctionality: new directions in rural development policy]
Arid and semiarid rangelands: production, diversity and global change
This paper comprises some general issues about the natural and agricultural context in arid and semiarid Mediterranean pastures. We include most of our studies concerning to shrublands characteristics: composition, production and diversity; which have been developed in the oriental sector of Andalusia for more than 20 years. This work is concluded with some personal considerations about the changes in the land uses, mainly due to rural abandonment, and its incidence in the global change.
Contribution to Local Landscape Units definition in OTALEX II
OTALEX II is the Territorial and Environmental Observatory of Alentejo (Portugal) and Extremadura (Spain), co-financed by POCTEP, developed with the cross-border collaboration of several Portuguese and Spanish bodies. It is composed of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) created in 2007, SDI-OTALEX (www.ideotalex.eu), which is an exchange platform for geographic information and Webmapping services among project partners.
Vegetation and Soil Seed Bank Relationships Across Microhabitats in an Abandoned Quercus suber Parkland Under Simulated Fire
Mediterranean agro-forestry systems are undergoing rapid change due to abandonment. This turns formerly cultivated or grazed oak-tree parklands (i.e., savanna-type formations called âdehesasâ) into flammable formations of scattered trees within a matrix of shrubs with open spaces. Wildfires can now occur, threatening the persistence of these formations. Fire-prone shrublands commonly regenerate after fire from seeds stored in the soil.
[Comparing the landscape structure in border natural parks: Arribes del Duero [Spain] versus Douro Internacional [Portugal]]
tragedy of the commons: unsustainable population structure of Iberian red deer in hunting estates
Hunting can influence population structure with consequences in ecological and evolutionary processes. Populations of Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) in Spain occur under two different management regimes: fenced and unfenced (open) estates. We compared census data, hunting bags and data from hunted individuals between both types of estates. Harvest on stags was moderate in fenced estates but strong in open ones, probably due to the competition between neighbouring landowners over the same deer populations.
Multiple DPSI frameworks for support of integrated research: a case study of the Bahía de Cádiz Nature Park (Spain)
System thinking and integrated research are widely applied approaches in environmental management, often facilitating the organization of information from different levels and sources. They are here applied to support the review of (1) political and management instruments and (2) elements that characterize the Bahia de Cádiz Nature Park (Spain). The latter objective is sustained by the DPSIR (Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) framework. A first DPSI conceptual map offers a broader view of the park capturing a range of elements that act at global, national and regional levels.
Protection of groundwater intended for human consumption: a proposed methodology for defining safeguard zones
Carbonate aquifers constitute a water reserve of essential importance for human supply. For this, it is necessary to establish suitable protection measures in order to achieve the good status of groundwater bodies intended for human supply according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.
Management System for Harvest Scheduling: The Case of Horticultural Production in Southeast Spain
This article analyzes the programming of farm production, understood not only as the choice among several crops, but also as their temporal distribution. The empirical study takes as a reference the horticultural sector in southeast Spain, since this area constitutes the highest concentration of small-scale farm production in Europe, where the climatic conditions allow the possibility of several harvests in year-round production, as well as several alternative crops.
SDI-based business processes: A territorial analysis web information system in Spain
Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) provide access to geospatial data and operations through interoperable Web services. These data and operations can be chained to set up specialized geospatial business processes, and these processes can give support to different applications. End users can benefit from these applications, while experts can integrate the Web services in their own business processes and developments.
