Location

The Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) Strategic Development Plan 2010-2016, was developed during 2009 and approved by the LLU Senate on June 10, 2009.


In order to perform its functions and implement its goals and objectives, the Latvia University of Agriculture has developed three activity programs:


1. Studies 

2. Science

3. Administrative and financial support for studies and research work


The goal of the Latvia University of Agriculture is to provide the possibility to obtain higher academic and higher professional education in agriculture, veterinary medicine, food technology, engineering, forestry science, social science, information technologies and environment management sectors as well as to develop science and to maintain and develop the Latvian intellectual potential and culture.


The objectives of the LLU:


To ensure the study quality corresponding with the standards of a national university what would allow to educate competitive specialists for the Latvian and international labor markets.

To develop the scientific potential to participate in international research, to integrate the academic education and research what would ensure introduction of innovative, knowledge - based technologies into the Latvian national economy, specially, in the Zemgale region.

To ensure sustainable development for the university as a national education, science and culture institution: 


to strengthen the legal basis;

to improve the organizational structure in accordance 

to the LLU objectives;to develop cooperation with institutions, academic education and science institutions in Latvia and abroad, enterprises and professional organizations and regional institutions of Zemgale;

to manage the LLU material and technical basis effectively.

The importance of land consolidation in Poland for the processes of shaping agrarian structure

The paper presents the problematic of the merge and exchange processes of land under the following programmes of agricultural land consolidation. By consolidating of land, there was activity for better creation of rural space in order to achieve comprehensive improvement of conditions for farming. According to the Act (1982) there were taken activities to shape the structure of the area, the rational design of land distribution, adjust the boundaries of the property to the system of water management facilities, construction of roads and terrain.

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the influence of edge effect on vegetation succession in black alder forests. 30 permanent study plots with size of 20×50 m were established with strips at several distances from the edge towards the center of the stand. Stands in study plots fell into three categories – with adjacent clearcut to S or SW created up to 10, 20-40 or more than 41 year ago. In all study plots living trees and dead wood was measured and vegetation was described by layers and the presence of rare epiphytic lichens was recorded.

Assessment of ecosystems and ecosystem services for sustainable land use management in Latvia

Assessment of ecosystem services has been set a strategically important role in the European Union countries, including it to the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020. The EU Biodiversity Strategy determines that “Member States, with the assistance of the Commission, will map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their national territory by 2014, assess the economic value of such services, and promote the integration of these values into accounting and reporting systems at EU and national level by 2020”.

Land is a non-renewable resource with limited availability and, therefore, a very important issue is the preservation of useful properties of land and comprehensive and sustainable land use. The process of land and soil degradation (decline of properties) leading to the formation of degraded land have been observed due to the influence of various economic activities and environmental conditions.

Spread and control of Sosnowsky's hogweed in Rezekne Municipality [Latvia]

As the area invaded by Sosnowsky’s hogweed increased in Rezekne Municipality, an increasing number of local residents, including agricultural land owners/managers could suffer from coming into contact with this plant. According to research studies, invasive species promote uncontrolled changes in the ecosystem, endangering agriculture and negatively affecting the economy. The research aim is to examine the spread of Sosnowsky's hogweed and the opinions of local residents on the control of this invasive species in Rezekne Municipality.
