The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. The purpose of this evaluation is to determine the land suitability of the Wadi Mawr area for the cultivation of (spate) irrigated sorghum under improved traditional management, and to determine the yield response to additional water gifts on various soil types. The prosperity of Botswana largely depends on its natural resources. As to the agricultural sector, poor utilization of land resources has until now resulted in low crop yields, poor livestock offtake rates, low rural household incomes and widespread degradation of soils and rangeland. Acknowledging these problems, the Botswana Government has recently adopted a series of policies to ensure that land resources are used in a sustainable manner.
