Land-use planning and sustainable biomass production for climate protection

General

In conformance with the EU Renewable Energy Sources Directive on sustainable production of liquid biomass and biofuels, the purpose of the project is to mitigate the negative consequences of uncontrolled land-use change (greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, negative climate impacts and land-use conflicts) for the purpose of biomass cultivation in Indonesia, Colombia and Brazil. The affected regions will be mapped and methods developed for the identification of carbon-rich areas. The project goal is to provide support to decision-making processes in connection with the creation of new and the expansion of existing plantations, in the interests of climate protection and nature conservation. In addition, policy advisory services on land use (LUC/ILUC) will be provided and the results made available to decision-makers in the partner countries as well as at European level.
