Press release: As Jan Satyagraha continues its way to Delhi, the government wants to revive negotiations | Land Portal

[via Ekta Parishad] October 8, 2012- On October 6th and 7th, the March Jan Satyagraha left Madhya Pradesh and entered in Rajasthan. The government expressed its will to revive the negotiations. In the meantime, solidarity actions continue in Europe.

Over the weekend, P.V. Rajagopal, the leader of Jan Satyagraha, had received intimation from the Prime Minister through the Rural Development Minister, that dialogue should be revived with the marchers. A team was prepared to go to New Delhi.

On October 6th, the march crossed the border between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan through a bridge over the Chambal River. On the way to the river, the road winds around the new barge that has been constructed, which, when completed, will be a four-lane highway and new rail track carrying more traffic across the river – one of the many issues that is being raised in the Jan Satyagraha, the right for land compensation of people who are unfairly displaced because of road infrastructure.

On the border district of Madhya Pradesh, thousands of people including school children, college students, local people and officials lined the highway to give garlands and greetings. Along the way, people give sandals to the barefoot and small supplies of rice and wheat. The Superintendent of Police in Morena provided all the services for the yatris safety.

After crossing the Chambal, 200 Gandhian Sarvodaya friends came to greet the yatris and welcome them to Rajasthan. The march then proceeded along a long hot tarmak to Daulpur covering a distance of 14 kilometers in excessive heat. People were tired by the time they reached their destinations at 4pm but there was a sense of fulfillment that the yatra had successfully crossed into the next state.

On October 7th, women formed three lines at the head of the march in order to highlight the situation of women and their role in the non-violent struggle. People were ready to leave at 8am to proceed to the Uttar Pradesh border which was about a 12 kilometer walk. Arriving by 1pm gave the yatris ample time to eat, rest, hold meetings, sing and dance. The adivasis (tribals) from Dindori (Madhya Pradesh) began to speak about their houses being burnt down and their fields being razed by the forest department and other groups taking away their lands and the tension they had to bear on the yatra itself.

Kasturi, a woman leader in charge of 2000 marchers from central Madhya Pradesh, declared that she spoke to many people that want to join the march.

Solidarity actions also took place during the week-end in France, in the presence of Nicholas Barla, member of the National Council of Ekta Parishad. The movie “Ahimsa” from Karl Saurer was projected in a cinema and followed by a public exchange in Strasbourg on October 6th, and around 40 French and German people walked 23kms on October 7th from Offenburg (Germany) to Strasbourg (France), to end their march in front of the statue of Gandhi. Many other support actions are planned in Europe during the month of October (see the list here : www.ektaeurope.org)
