The 8th India Land and Development Conference (ILDC) convened a wide spectrum of stakeholders—researchers, policymakers, civil society actors, private sector leaders, and grassroots representatives—to critically examine the evolving landscape of land governance in India. Held at a pivotal moment in the country’s development journey, the 2024 ILDC addressed the complex interplay of land with urbanization, climate change, infrastructure growth, and legal and technological transformations.
This year’s conference focused on advancing inclusive and sustainable land governance, emphasizing key cross-cutting themes such as gender equity, food security, climate resilience, technological innovation, forest and urban-rural land dynamics, and socio-economic justice. Participants engaged in thoughtful dialogue and shared cutting-edge research, drawing attention to the need for integrated, participatory, and data-driven approaches to land governance.
The proceedings capture rich discussions on land tenure security, policy reforms, and the responsible use of emerging technologies such as geospatial tools and digital land records. A range of case studies from across India provided on-the-ground perspectives, highlighting both challenges and innovative solutions in informal settlements, peri-urban areas, and community land rights.
The ILDC reinforced the urgent need for collaborative governance frameworks that promote transparency, accountability, and justice, particularly for marginalized communities. As land systems face growing pressure, the conference underscored the critical role of local experiences and inclusive approaches in shaping equitable and climate-resilient land policies.
This volume serves as a resource for practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers committed to transforming India’s land governance landscape. It offers insights and pathways forward in the collective pursuit of land justice and sustainable development.
