USAID’s Tenure and Global Climate Change Program will facilitate a dialogue on experiences of documenting household and community-level customary rights in Zambia. The dialogue will bring together the perspectives of government, traditional leaders, practitioners, civil society, and academics to consider how customary land documentation can contribute to national development goals and increased service delivery in rural and peri-urban areas.

In 2015, all countries committed to realize 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and monitor all targets. The Agenda 2030 strongly emphasizes the cross-cutting and central role of securing tenure rights to land and natural resources to eradicate poverty and hunger as well as to achieve gender equality and empowerment of women and, more broadly, sustainable development.

The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) assessed the legal frameworks for major resource sectors in Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique to analyze whether and to what extent they enable sustainable investments. Relevant international standards suggest that sustainable investments integrate socioeconomic and environmental concerns, bound together by the rule of law.
