Press release: As the Jan Satyagraha entered Agra district in Uttar Pradesh, a ten point agreement proposed by the government is under discussion | Land Portal

[via Ekta Parishad] October 5, 2012- As the Jan Satyagraha reached Uttar Pradesh on its sixth day on the road, a delegation of Jan Satyagraha met with government representatives in Delhi. Steps for an agreement to evolve might be under way.

After crossing a corner of Rajasthan, the thousands of Jan Satyagraha marchers passed the border of Uttar Pradesh yesterday reaching the city of Saiha in the afternoon. The Uttar Pradesh media had been awaiting the arrival of the marchers eagerly for a long series of interviews with the leaders of the Jan Satyagraha. The national government meanwhile, seeking to continue negotiations on an agreement with Jan Satyagraha organisers, had invited P.V. Rajagopal to come to Delhi yesterday to further discuss possibilities to reach an accord. P.V. Rajagopal, however, decided to stay with the marchers on the road and to send a delegation to Delhi. At 5.30 p.m., a team of the Jan Satyagraha, led by Mr. S.C. Beher, Viday Upadhyay as well as Ramesh Sharma and Aneesh Kumar from Ekta Parishad, met with the Minister of Rural Development, Mr. Jairam Ramesh, and other government officials for approximately one and a half hour to discuss a new 10 point proposal by the government. The proposal will reach the march today and sources say that there are some common points emerging.

The march has already reached the Agra District and is currently about 24 kilometers away from the city of Agra. Should it be possible to finalise the process and complete the currently ongoing positive steps toward an agreement, Mr. Jairam Ramesh might come to Agra on October 11th in order to sign such an agreement together with Jan Satyagraha leaders. In Morena, three days ago, the State Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, had already welcomed the marchers and made a strong statement in support of adivasi rights to land and livelihood. The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot similarly had called upon P.V. Rajagopal P.V. as the march crossed that state to express his support for the demands of the Jan Satyagraha.

The proposal being discussed is to establish a road map for a contemporary land reform policy that addresses the very existential needs of the twenty percent of the Indian population living in great poverty. At the center are institutions and legal provisions that can deliver land for shelter and agriculture to those most in need represented by the marchers of Jan Satyagraha.

DATES and PLACES :
March Jan Satyagraha, October 2012, from Gwalior to Delhi, INDIA.
October 9th, 2012 : March from Tehra to Rohta (Uttar Pradesh).
