BACKGROUND
The Centre for Gender Studies was founded in March 2009 under the name “Centre for Gender, Culture and Development” (CGCD) at the former Kigali Institute of Education (KIE). Its activities began in June of the same year after the appointment of Professor Shirley Randell as the first Director. Effective teaching activities began in January 2011 with 52 students in the first cohort. The first graduation was held in December 2012 with 37 graduates with a Master of Sciences in Gender and Development. With the restructuring of the University of Rwanda in 2013, the name of the Centre changed to the “Centre for Gender Studies” (CGS). The Centre is now part of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), one of the colleges of University of Rwanda (UR) although it is still based at the College of Education of the University of Rwanda, Remera Campus, Kigali.

To become an internationally recognized centre of excellence in gender studies 

MISSION

To train gender experts and practitioners, stimulate research and documentation in gender fields and help to build the networks and partnerships needed to promote community gender awareness at the local, national, regional and international level.
