Selon un rapport récemment publié par l’organisation de défense des droits de l’homme Global Witness, l’année 2016 a été la plus sanglante pour les activistes du foncier.


En effet, dans le monde, en moyenne quatre personnes ont été assassinées chaque semaine, l’année dernière, en défendant leurs terres, que ce soit contre des projets miniers, hydroélectriques ou agricoles. En tout 200 personnes ont été tuées en 2016, soit une hausse d'environ 10% par rapport aux 185 morts de 2015.


Selon les conclusions de l’étude, la violence contre les militants des droits fonciers ne se développe pas seulement en nombre, elle s’étend également géographiquement, avec des assassinats enregistrés dans 24 pays, contre 16 en 2015.


L’Amérique latine est le continent le plus touché avec 60% des morts. On déplore également deux morts en Afrique du Sud.
