Le développement de la production animale aide les pays en développement à remplir l'ensemble des huit objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement des Nations unies. Cependant, si elles sont mal gérées, les exploitations d'élevage peuvent porter atteinte à l'environnement, contribuer à la propagation de maladies infectieuses et mettre en danger la santé publique par le biais d'aliments dangereux. Nous pouvons veiller à tirer pleinement parti du potentiel de l'élevage pour atteindre ces OMD en favorisant des politiques, des stratégies et des technologies qui contribuent à accroître l'énorme bénéfice que l'élevage représente pour les communautés pauvres tout en maîtrisant les effets préjudiciables de ce dernier.
