En automne 2004, les négociations relatives aux Directives volontaires à l'appui de la concrétisation du droit à une alimentation adéquate ont été conclues avec succès sous les auspices de la FAO. Ces directives ont été signées par l'ensemble des 190 pays membres de la FAO. La voie des négociations avait pourtant été semée d'écueils, de nombreux États ayant d'abord refusé de signer par peur du caractère contraignant des directives. Il a malgré tout été possible d'adopter ces dernières en un temps relativement court. Les parties aux négociations ont réussi à trouver un compromis acceptable pour tous.
