The 11th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA11) | Land Portal

The 11th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change (CBA11) will focus on harnessing natural resources and ecosystems for adaptation.

The 11th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA11) to climate change will take place in Kampala, Uganda from 22-29 June 2017.

Community-based adaptation to climate change (CBA) focuses on empowering communities to use their own knowledge and decision-making processes to take action on climate change. CBA11 will provide an opportunity to review the latest developments in CBA practice, policy and theory with participants from around the world.

This year's conference theme aims to highlight the benefits and challenges of using natural resources and ecosystems as part of adaptation work.

The conference is designed for practitioners, policymakers, planners and donors working on community-based adaptation at all levels and scales. The event will enhance the capacity of stakeholders to work together to improve the livelihoods of those most vulnerable to climate change.

Ahead of the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to take part in field visits to community adaptation projects located in a variety of ecosystems in Uganda. (Field visit locations are currently being shortlisted and details will be released in March.)

The formal conference in Kampala from 25 June will feature plenary and parallel interactive sessions, hands-on learning opportunities, group discussions, high-level speaker panels, video competitions, poster presentations and more.

Field trip registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and you can ensure you receive the latest updates by signing up to alerts about CBA11.

Once you have registered, the CBA team will send you regular email updates, including logistics information, guidance on travel, accommodation and visa processes, as well as news and programme updates.

Registered delegates will also be asked if they are interested in presenting a poster or film on CBA at the conference, or whether they would like to be a panellist or discussant. If you have any questions about the conference or registration, email cbaconference@iied.org.

Connect with participants

CBA11 is part of a conversation: there are a range of opportunities to connect with participants and speakers before the conference:

The 2017 conference will be hosted by the Government of Uganda. It is being organised by IIED, the International Centre on Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), the Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MAK) and the Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment.

Previous conferences

The 10th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA10) was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The conference theme was 'enhancing urban community resilience'. The International University of Bangladesh (IUB) campus hosted the event, and more than 300 participants from around the world took part.

CBA10 concluded with a call for governments, NGOs and infrastructure investors to work with urban community federations to mainstream and finance local adaptation.
