CALL FOR PAPERS: Sustainability Practices in Higher Education Institutions – Mapping Trends & Good Practice at Universities Round the World

Expressions of interest are now being requested for this a book that aims to unite theory and practice of sustainable development at higher education institutions. The volume, edited by Walter Leal Filho, Ulisses Azeiteiro, Sandra Caeiro, and Charbel Jabbour, will be published by Springer.

Environmental and sustainability performance are issues that used to be more associated with industries and corporations in the private sector also within corporate social responsibility. But in the last decades organizations in the public sector in particular educational institutions are also interested in being engaged in what is called “Campus sustainability” or “Campus greening”. Considering the societal role of higher education institutions, they have the mission to carry out research, teaching and the creation of settings that allow developing new competencies that lead to more sustainable practices. The aim of this book is to provide a contribution to the state of the art about the current sustainability practices and guidelines applied in higher education institutions. The first chapters will introduce current sustainability assessment methodologies and the role of universities in promoting sustainability. Subsequent chapters will present several international examples of sustainability assessment tools specifically developed for higher education institutions, such as the AISHE – Auditing Instrument for Sustainability in Higher Education, the GASU – Graphical Assessment of Sustainability in Universities tool, the STARS – Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, the STAUNCH – Sustainability tool for Auditing Universities Curricula in Higher Education, Sustainability Report Card. Other integrated tools not specifically developed for Universities will also be discussed like the ecological footprint, corporate social responsibility, sustainability reporting and GRI - Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines, eco-labelling, and sustainable construction and greenbuilding. A final chapter will discuss the current status of environmental and sustainability practices in higher education institutions and outline future prospects.

Expressions of interest should relate to primary research initiatives and projects, or revision of the state of the art, which can be formulated as book chapters in a relatively short time. They should entail a 200 words abstract with all contact data from the authors. Please send them by the the 15th August 2012 to: scaeiro@uab.pt , ulisses@uab.pt.
